I wrote a very impactful article for The Imprent, and I'd love for you to gain some perspective on what a young person goes through in foster care or the juvenile justice system and how YOU can change a life.
I spent most of my childhood in foster care, group homes, and juvenile detention.
So when I talk about the juvenile justice system, I am not looking at it only through policy, statistics, or research.
I remember what it felt like to be the kid sitting on the other side of it.
We ask young people to make better choices.
To control their emotions.
To believe in themselves.
To imagine a better future.
But what happens when almost everything they have experienced has taught them not to expect one?
That is the question behind a new article I wrote for The Imprint, a publication of Fostering Media Connections.
I believe young people need accountability. They need structure. They need consequences.
But they also need something else.
Hope!
They need adults who are willing to look beyond the behavior and ask what is happening underneath it.
They need exposure to people, places, careers, and possibilities they may have never known existed.
Because I believe something very simple:
You cannot chase a future you cannot see.
This article is personal to me, but it is also bigger than my story.
It is about what we can do differently for young people who too often have been defined by the worst thing that has happened to them, or the worst decision they have made.
